Pure Fishing Pro Lane Wins Tennessee Triumph

Pure Fishing pro Bobby Lane outlasted KVD to earn his first BASS victory this past weekend. The Lakeland, Fla., native weighed in 97-pounds, 9-ounces of fish during the four-day event

COLUMBIA, S.C. (June 8, 2009) – Pure Fishing pro Bobby Lane outlasted KVD to earn his first BASS victory this past weekend. The Lakeland, Fla., native weighed in 97-pounds, 9-ounces of fish during the four-day event at Kentucky Lake. The 2008 BASS Rookie of the Year led wire-to-wire to earn himself a cool $100,000.

Lane was using the low-profile baitcasting Revo SX reels spooled with Berkley Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon. Lane’s key baits for the tournament were the PowerBait Saltwater Mullet and 10-inch PowerBait Power Worm in Plum color.

“Pure Fishing really came through this weekend,” said Lane. “They are the true innovators of the sport and it is my privilege to have them as sponsors. I wish this win would have come earlier, but I am thrilled to represent Pure Fishing with a win on Kentucky Lake. Everything from my Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon Line to my PowerBait Mullet performed as advertised.”

Surrounded by nearly 100 onlookers on the final day, Lane brought in his lightest bag of the tournament, 16 pounds, 15-ounces, to beat out the field. Lane was not the only Pure Fishing pro enjoying the Kentucky Lake atmosphere; Skeet Reese (4th), Britt Meyers (7th), Kelly Jordon (8th), Byron Velvick (10th) and Jeff Kreit finished eleventh. Pure Fishing pro Skeet Reese is still nipping at the heels of KVD for the BASS Angler of the Year Title, only trailing by seven points.

The Pure Fishing pros will be on the road at the next Elite Series event that is set for June 11-14 on the Mississippi River in Ft. Madison, Iowa.

Berkley Trilene and Pflueger Among Award Winners at 2009 ICAST New Product Showcase

Pure Fishing came away with some hardware at the 2009 ICAST show. Berkley Trilene TransOptic and the Pflueger Arbor Combo were presented with the Best in Line and Best Combo award on Wednesday.

After four years in development, Berkley has designed a nylon monofilament line that captures UV rays to physically change the line’s color, making the line a hi-vis gold above the water and transparent below the surface where the UV rays are filtered out. The color-changing line benefits anglers that spend their days watching their line for the subtlest of bites. Anglers see the line, fish don’t.

“Four years ago we saw a need for a line that benefited anglers that needed a monofilament that could be watched,” said Berkley Product Manager, Clay Norris. “Through efforts with our product innovation team, we were able to come up with the technology to harness UV rays to change the color of nylon monofilament above water. Our team has worked extremely hard to be the first to produce TransOptic.”
Designed to handle today’s superlines, the Pflueger Arbor Combo has won the ICAST show Best Combo Award.

With the introduction of the new Pflueger® Arbor spinning reel, it became apparent the reel needed a special rod to benefit from the reel’s oversized spool. Not just any spinning rod would do. The result is a perfectly matched and balanced rod and reel combination that takes advantage of the reel’s design and purpose.

For the rod, Pflueger started with a one-piece IM-8 graphite blank for it’s lightweight and enhanced sensitivity. To complement the line coming off the reel’s oversized spool, the Large Arbor Guide Concept system was developed. This includes a larger stripper guide that is reversed. This reduces line buildup before the front guide during casting.

“We designed this rod n’ reel combo to fish the new generation superlines,” said Andrew Wheeler, Pflueger Product Manager. “Whether an angler decides to throw the fluorocarbon or braided lines the Arbor’s larger design is the perfect. The rod was custom built to take full advantage of the many benefits of the Pflueger Arbor.”

Berkley and Abu Garcia Pro Wendlandt Claims Third AOY Title

Berkley and Abu Garcia pro team member Clark Wendlandt earned his third FLW Angler of the Year title, more than any other angler. The Leander, Texas native earned a cool $25,000 and a Ranger 198VX powered by a 200-horsepower Yamaha outboard for the title. Wendlandt secured the crown on Lake Champlain with 10 bass weighing 28 pounds, 7 ounces over the final two days of the final FLW Tour qualifying event of the season in a race that went down to the last day of the regular season.

“There are so many great anglers on the FLW Tour and to come away with another AOY title is very special,” said Wendlandt. “I made the switch to Berkley and Abu Garcia this year and their support means the world to me; without them as a key sponsor this would have been a tough year. The Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon is unmatched and the REVO STX reels are the real deal. The castability of the 100% Fluorocarbon matched with the STX is unstoppable.”

A 13-year veteran of the FLW Tour, Wendlandt claimed his first Angler of the Year title in 1997 and received his second title in 2000. The Berkley and Abu Garcia pro has accumulated 34 top-10 finishes and three victories while earning a staggering $1.6 million.

“The FLW Tour trail is getting tougher,” said Wendlandt. “There are a ton of young guns coming up and nipping at the veteran’s heels. Guys like Stetson Blaylock are making tournament wins hard to come by, but the veterans of the sport are still putting together some wins of their own.”

Berkley and Abu Garcia Pros dominated the FLW Angler of the Year race with four out of the top five positions. Rounding out the top spots for Angler of the Year were; Berkley team pros Luke Clausen of Gainesville, Ga. (2nd), Brent Ehrler of Redlands, Calif. (3rd) and Bryan Thrift of Shelby, N.C. finishing in fifth place.
